Solar Panels

1. Solar Panels

Your solar panels are made up of silicon photovoltaic (PV) cells. When sunlight hits your solar panels, the solar PV cells absorb the sunlight’s rays and electricity is

produced via the Photovoltaic Effect. The electricity produced

by your panels is called Direct Current (DC) electricity,

and which is not suitable to be used in your home by your

appliances. Instead, the DC electricity is directed to

your solar inverter.

2. Inverter

Your inverter is able to convert the DC electricity into Alternating Current (AC) electricity, which can be used in your home. From here, the AC electricity is directed to your switchboard.

3. Switch Board

A switchboard allows your usable AC electricity to be sent to the appliances in your home. Your switchboard will always ensure that your solar energy will be used first to power your home, only accessing additional energy

from the grid when your solar production is not enough.

4. Utility Meter

All households with solar are required to have a bi-directional meter (utility meter), which your electricity retailer will install for you. A bi-directional meter is able

to record all the power that is drawn to the house, but also

record the amount of solar energy that is exported back

to the grid. This is called net-metering.

5. Grid

Any unused solar electricity is then sent back to the grid. Exporting solar power back to the grid will earn you a credit on your electricity bill, called a feed-in tariff (FiT). Your electricity bills will then take into account the electricity you purchase from the grid, plus credits for the electricity generated by your solar power system that you don’t use.
With solar power, you don’t need to switch it on in the morning or switch it off at night – the system will do this seamlessly and automatically. You also don’t need to switch between solar power and the grid, as your solar system can determine when is best to do so based on the amount of energy being consumed in your home. In fact a solar system requires very little maintenance (as there are no moving parts) which means you’ll hardly know it’s there. This also means a good quality solar power system will last a long time. Your solar inverter (usually installed in your garage or in an accessible spot), can provide you with information like the amount of electricity being produced at any particular point in time or how much it has generated for the day or in total since it has been operating. Many quality inverters feature wireless connectivity and easy to use online monitoring.
If it seems complicated, don’t worry; one of Solar Right WA’s expert Energy Consultant’s will guide you through the process of how solar power works either by phone, email or via a no obligation home consultation.

L1

Solar power works by converting light  from the sun into electricity.

This is done by installing solar panels on your roof which generate DC (Direct Current) electricity. This is then fed into a solar inverter which converts the DC electricity from your solar panels into AC (Alternating Current) electricity.

Selecting the right system size depends on a few key elements:

  • Your budget
  • Available roof space
  • Electricity usage
  • Future energy plans (Electric Vehicle & Battery Storage)
  • Are you planning to add a pool pump?

We are now at a pivotal point where it is better to select a larger system due to the lower cost of solar panels, higher electricity usage and the fast payback on additional kilowatts.

If you have the roof space, we recommend selecting a system size of at least 5kW.

The current biggest seller is 6.64kW system with a 5kW inverter for daily usage of 15-30kWh.

Making the choice to invest in a solar system that will be a stress-free solution hinges massively on the reliability of your solar PV panels and inverter. Your system will be exposed to over 130,000 hours of Australia’s unrelenting sunlight, harsh environment & extreme conditions over its lifespan.

The more prominent established brands tend to offer better warranty terms, higher efficiency rates, advanced technology and lower degradation rates. However, they do tend to be more expensive. When it comes to cheaper solar panels, on the other hand, the saying that ‘buy once buy right’ has never been more applicable.

We have partnered with Brighte finance to provide our clients a trusted financial pathway if you don’t have access to the funds to pay upfront for the solar system.

We have a solution for every solar system to facilitate adding a battery. We can retrofit and reconfigure your existing system for storage and blackout protection to accommodate your budget and requirements.

There are 2 rebates available with solar.

    1. There are federal rebates up to $7000 available for rooftop solar and battery storage which can significantly reduce the cost of purchasing and installing a solar system.
    2. A feed-in tariff rebate is the rate you are paid for any electricity generated by your rooftop solar system that is fed back into the grid in WA which is automatically allocated on your Synergy account.

The number of solar panels that you need depends on the system size that you select.

The solar industry is constantly evolving to achieve greater efficiency & productivity.

A 6.64 kW solar system currently consists of 16 x 415W solar panels which are generally 1750mm x 1095mm in size.

To install a solar power system you’ll need to have a bi-directional energy meter that is capable of separately measuring and recording electricity flows in each direction – how much energy you consume from the grid vs. how much

excess energy you export back to the grid (thanks to your solar system).

If you don’t already have a bi-directional meter, your meter will need to be replaced, reprogrammed or reconfigured to ensure it’s compatible with your solar power system. We’ll work with Western Power to arrange this on your behalf and all metering costs incurred will be charged on the bill following your installation.

Metering Costs to switch to DEBS

Meter upgrade fee:         $96.50 (inclusive of GST)

Meter reprogram fee :    $96.50 (inclusive of GST)
