Yes, It’s Still Worth Installing Solar
Yes, it’s still worth installing solar power!
The Synergy website states, “Receiving an average of 8.8 hours of sunlight each day, Perth is recognised as Australia’s sunniest city. Taking advantage of our abundance of sunlight with solar panels means you can invest in sustainable energy and reduce your electricity costs for years to come.”
They offer this simple representation of the process involved:
- Sun hits the PV cells and causes electrons within the cell to flow, generating electricity
- This flow results in direct current (DC) electricity that is low in voltage
- The panels are connected to an inverter that converts the DC flow into alternating current (AC) – which is necessary for residential use
- Finally, the flow of electricity is connected to the grid.
Thanks to photovoltaic cells mounted in solar panels, the sun’s energy can be turned into electricity. These cells are made of silicon discs and unlock the potential for solar power.
So why exactly is it still worth installing solar energy on your home?
You Will Save on Electricity Bills
Installing solar panels significantly reduces monthly electricity bills and your dependence on the power grid. This energy independence protects against rising electricity costs and volatile fuel prices. With analysts forecasting continued increases in electricity rates, solar energy remains a cost-effective solution and long-term investment in the future.
Energy.gov.au says concerning the rising energy costs:
“Electricity prices have risen significantly over the past decade largely due to increases in network costs. The ‘network’ is the transmission and distribution system of poles and wires that deliver electricity to your home.
The repair and replacement of aging poles and wires, increased peak demand (periods placing the highest demand on the energy network—such as hot summer days), population growth, and rising standards for power reliability have all contributed to network cost increases.”
So, basically, they’re saying that they’re going up and will keep going up forever and ever amen.
If you are buying solar panels, you can ask the salesperson to show you the minimum and maximum savings. Any good salesperson or installer would be happy to. These savings are calculated using 0% and 100% exports respectively. Your return will obviously be somewhere between these numbers based on how much you end up exporting into the grid in real-world terms.
Once installed, your solar inverter can provide you with information like the amount of electricity (power) being produced at any particular point in time, or how much energy (units) it has generated for the day or in total since installation.
You Can Reduce your Carbon Footprint
Unlike energy generated by fossil fuels, solar energy doesn’t release the harmful carbon dioxide (CO2) emission. Sustainable carbon-free energy solutions such as solar panels are absolutely crucial to slowing the pace of climate change and preventing further far greater damage to the environment.
When it comes to reducing our carbon footprint these days, we all know the list:
- learn the 5 R’s: refuse, reduce, reuse, rot, recycle: …
- bike more and drive less: …
- conserve water and protect our waterways: …
- eat seasonally, locally, and more plants: …
- switch to sustainable, clean energy.
We can all benefit from implanting that list top to bottom, that’s for sure.
When it comes to the last one on the list about switching to sustainable, clean energy (which we obviously focus on here) it seems to be the first one left out!
That can be as it’s still not understood how easy it is to make the switch and how affordable it is!
It really can be as easy as finding a supplier/installer that you trust and then making the necessary arrangements and inspections for a quote!
As far as cost goes, the Australian Government is still offering incentives to those who install these systems.
The Clean Energy Regulator website describes the government incentives like this: “The Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme creates a financial incentive for individuals and small businesses to install eligible small-scale renewable energy systems such as solar panel systems, small-scale wind systems, small-scale hydro systems, solar water heaters, and air source heat pumps.”
Once the details are worked out and paperwork completed, the systems can be installed in a day and start reducing your carbon footprint AND saving you money from the moment they’re switched on!
Now that’s got to be a good thing!
Increase the Value of Your Home
As more Australians see the value in solar panels, installing a quality system on your property adds instant desirability and value.
Unlike adding a swimming pool which can be costly to maintain, Solar PV systems don’t take a whole lot of caring for and just want to save you money!
Realistically, this is one of the smartest decisions any homeowner can make as an investment as it decreases living costs and increases property value INSTANTLY.
In like, one day.
Once they’re installed, they’re in and you start saving and enjoying the benefits.
If you had the choice of two identical properties in the same location, one had solar panels that you knew saved up to 90% off the power bill and the other one didn’t have them… which one would you consider the most?
We tend to choose the easier option, especially if it’s going to save us money at the same time!
Just like great landscaping, fresh lawns, or quality fixtures throughout your home, a professionally installed, quality solar PV system is going to set your property apart from others on the market.
Even if you’re not selling, or planning to sell, you can have the peace of mind and confidence knowing you’ve made a great decision and be granted ‘bragging rights’ when you hear others complain of the high cost of electricity these days and you say, “Really? Didn’t notice.”
Solar Energy is a Long-Term Investment
Your solar power system starts saving you money the moment it’s switched on and the benefits of solar-generated power run well into the distant future. Of course, the longer you have your system, the more of these benefits you’ll enjoy. Most solar power systems do pay themselves off in five years or less and, as mentioned, they increase the value of your home.
I think we’ve well covered and hopefully, you’re convinced of the benefits that are long and short term as far as the environment and your savings are concerned.
